American Office and Herman Miller recently hosted the 2nd annual Modern Classic, a juried art competition and silent auction that benefits an organization within the local community. This year the event was held at the Grand Opening celebration of the Baltimore Design School, with proceeds benefiting the school’s academic and design programs. With more than 400 guests in attendance, the Modern Classic raised $4,170.
Inspired by Charles and Ray Eames, iconic figures in architecture and furniture design, the Modern Classic invites local area designers to create sculptural art using Herman Miller’s classic Eames Molded Plastic chair. Interested participants were required to submit a sketch of their proposed design earlier this summer, with the top 25 submissions given an Eames chair to bring the design to life.
Completed designs were critiqued by a panel of judges while on display at the Grand Opening celebration of the Baltimore Design School, the city’s newest public school and the nation’s first and only public design school for grades 6-12. Organizers of the Modern Classic chose to partner with the Baltimore Design School as it was an opportunity for American Office and Herman Miller to give back to the local community by raising money to support the mission and vision of the school.
“The story of the school and the promise it has for talented kids in the Baltimore community, is really inspiring,” said Sheri Compton, Senior Marketing Director at Herman Miller. “We were proud to join with American Office and the Baltimore design community to help support this exciting vision.”
Of the 25 designs submitted, 1st Place was awarded to Lisa Ferretto (Hord Coplan Macht) and Bridget Parlato (Full Circuit Studio). Entitled “The Get Up, Stand Up Chair,” their chair’s design featured articles, quotes and images of local and national issues, encouraging people to stand up and take action in their communities. Other winners included Dana Verbosh (2nd place) and Ehren Gaag (3rd place) of Gensler, with honorable mentions given to Heidi Han and Hal Sachs of Hord Coplan Macht, as well as Jillian Erhardt and Mare Distler of Ayers Saint Gross.
Following the announcement of the winners, the chairs were entered into a silent auction where event attendees bid on their chair of choice. This year the auction successfully raised $4,170.
Event partners of the Modern Classic included Maharam and Shaw Contract Group.
