It all started when Michael Kuntz, Senior Vice President, challenged his brother David, President, to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. For those of you unaware of what the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge entails, it consists of the below steps:
1. Fill one bucket of water & one separate, smaller bucket of ice.
2. On camera, thank the person who nominated you &
subsequently nominate three additional individuals of your choice.
3. Combine ice into water bucket.
4. Pick up and dump over your own head!
5. Post to social media
BUT… there’s a catch! If you choose not to fulfill the ice bucket challenge, you can instead place a donation with the ALS Charity fund at the following link: ALS Donations
This campaign was devised as a means of promoting awareness of the disease while simultaneously funding research for a cure.
In the American Office Kuntz brother’s case, David accepted his end of the challenge! The following morning, David ventured out to the American Office parking lot with a bucket each of ice and water. Allowing fellow American Office employees to film his icy shower, David’s nomination of the Sales Managers went viral through the company. In just a few days, nearly ten additional American Office employees had completed their challenge and sent in videos for posting on our Facebook page to publicly announce those subsequently nominated. As the videos roll in, those who opt not to take the icy challenge have contributed means to fund research for an ALS Cure.
Why are we getting involved?
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As motor neurons between the brain and spinal cord begin to deteriorate, the ability for the brain to activate and control muscle movement is lost. Although research by the National Institutes of Health shows about 20,000 people in the United States have ALS at any given time and an estimated 5,000 people per year are diagnosed; ALS is a generally unfamiliar, unrecognized disease. As much of the nation has supported, we also want to help in any way we can! As there is no known cure for ALS, promotion of this condition and encouragement to donate to its research is something we at American Office can whole heartedly support.
We’ve had a ton of fun through our ALS Ice Bucket Challenge videos and experiences and we’re not done yet! Visit our Facebook page here to follow our involvement and see more on the Ice Bucket Challenge at American Office.
We challenge YOU! Are you up for it?
